Major Sergei Lebedev, a serviceman of the National Guard Directorate for the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, conducted a master class on making trench candles for activists of the regional branch of the All-Russian public movement “Volunteers of Victory”. The event was held at the Regional Center for Youth Policy and Military-Patriotic Education of Youth.

— Trench candles are used mainly for lighting rooms and cooking, including in the area of a special military operation. Because a candle made of paraffin and paper burns long enough and with a good flame. It is lightweight, easy to use and does not take up much space in your backpack. A good candle can burn for about seven to eight hours,” said Major Lebedev.

Contributing to environmental protection and increasing environmental awareness, master class participants used collected recyclable materials – cans from cans, cardboard boxes, leftover paraffin and wax candles – to make camping heat and light sources.

— The cardboard is cut into strips along the height of the can so that it does not stick out from it. A wick is made from several small scraps, the length of which should reach the bottom and rise above the upper sides of the tin. Wrap strips of cardboard around the wick like a roll and place it tightly inside the jar. Then melted paraffin or wax is poured into the jar. When it hardens, the candle is ready,” explained the Russian Guard officer.

Trench candles made by volunteers, along with other useful gifts and warm greetings from the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, are planned to be sent to Russian military personnel participating in a special military operation in the near future.
