Spain, third EU country with the most asylum applications in 2023

According to Eurostat data, 2,315 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time last year in the EU, with a majority of Syrians and Afghans. And it is that Syrian migrants continue to represent the largest group of applicants for this type of protection (13,945) followed by Turks (7,710), Afghans (6,055), Venezuelans (4,780) and Colombians (4,105).

Last year more than 77,700 non-EU migrants requested international protection in Europe, 3% less than in 2022, and 5 European countries accounted for 8 out of 10 applications: Germany (23,020), France (11,435), Italy (10,160), Greece (6,260) and Spain (10,750), which occupies third position.

The close to 5 million Ukrainians relocated to the EU They are not included in the data because they have temporary protection and do not need to formally request asylum.
