German deputies demand clarification on Russia’s alleged recordings of its military

German parliamentarians have demanded this Saturday to receive clarifications about the leak through a Russian media of a meeting of German military personnel in which sensitive issues related to Ukraine were discussed.

The leak has been confirmed by sources from the German Ministry of Defense cited by German public television ARD. The source has described this incident as a “super disaster.”

“Our evaluation concludes that a conversation within the Air Force has been intercepted,” he indicated in reference to the 38-minute recording published by media related to Moscow, such as public television RT. “We cannot say with certainty whether changes have been made to the recorded or written version that is circulating on social media,” he added.

“If this story turns out to be true, it would be a very problematic incident,” Konstantin von Notz, president of the parliamentary committee that oversees the Intelligence services, told the media of the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND) publishing group.

In the audio, senior Air Force commanders are heard discussing the theoretical possibility that Ukraine could use German Taurus cruise missiles, which the German Government has so far refused to supply for fear of being directly involved in the war with Russia.

The conversation includes details of the debate over the supply of Taurus missiles to Ukraine, as well as a potentially explosive statement about other Western allies.

The exchange heard in the recording addresses whether long-range Taurus missiles would be technically capable of destroying the Kerch Bridge, built by Russia between its territory and the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, annexed by Moscow in violation of international law.

The audio also contains a reference to the British having “a few people on the ground” in relation to the deployment of their Storm Shadow cruise missiles delivered to Ukraine.

This comes after the United Kingdom was upset by what London considered an indiscretion on the part of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz when, in the context of the Taurus debate, he declared that “what the British and French do in terms of target control and accompaniment cannot be done in Germany”.

Some saw this as an indication that French and British forces are supporting the control of cruise missiles supplied to Ukraine. London immediately denied that this was the case.

Scholz has repeatedly ruled out supplying Taurus missiles to Ukraine, despite repeated requests from kyiv, arguing that he fears Germany will be drawn deeper into the war launched by the Kremlin in February 2022.

However, the German Chancellor declared this Saturday from Rome that he will do everything in his power to accelerate the ongoing investigation into what happened.

“This must be clarified very carefully, with great interest and very quickly. That is what is needed,” said the German president. In any case, he has acknowledged that this is a “very serious” matter.
