British justice will rule today on the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States

This Tuesday, the High Court of London will publish the decision that will determine the future of Julian Assange: the court will announce today whether the founder and editor of WikiLeaks He will be extradited to the United States, where he faces a sentence of 175 years for the dissemination of thousands of secret documents, which showed alleged war crimes committed in Afghanistan by the American army.

Stella Assange, the activist’s wife, has announced through her social networks that the hearing in which the court’s decision will be announced will start this Tuesday at 10:30, London time: if the appeal filed is accepted by the defense and reject extradition, the case would be subject to a new legal examination. If, on the other hand, the British justice system supports the extradition, Assange’s defense has already declared its intention to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Seven years as a refugee in the Ecuadorian embassy

Assange spent 7 years as a refugee in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, although he was handed over to the British authorities in June 2019: since then, the defense has tried to block Assange’s extradition to the United States, where the activist risks a very high prison sentence, due to the “profound consequences” that Washington considers its leaks hadwhich they consider affected informants living in conflict territories.

Assange’s defense, at the hearing last February, argued that their client could not receive a fair trial in the North American country, and stated that Assange’s activities are part of journalistic work and that, therefore, the founder of Wiki Leaks should enjoy special protection. Furthermore, the defense argued that Assange He was accused of “political crimes”, and that for this reason the extradition treaty should not be applied andbetween the United Kingdom and the United States.
