France registers the right to abortion in its Constitution in a “historic” reform

French deputies and senators, meeting in a joint session, have adopted by majority the inscription of abortion in the Constitution, a reform that they considered “historic.”

In total, 780 of the 925 parliamentarians have adopted a constitutional reform that will modify article 34 of the Magna Carta to include “the guaranteed freedom of women to resort to voluntary termination of pregnancy”.

The project, launched by the president, Emmanuel Macron, to preserve that right threatened in other countries, had great popular support and obtained support from all political parties, without reservations on the left and more conditional on the right and extreme right.

The French Prime MinisterGabriel Attal has assured that France “is preparing to change history” by inscribing abortion in its Constitution, when opening the Congress that is preparing this Monday to approve this reform of the Magna Carta.

“We can change our fundamental law to register the freedom of women, with whom we have a debt, with those who have suffered, with those who have died, with those who have had to escape clandestinely abroad, whose memory makes us ashamed” , the head of the Executive stressed in his speech before the joint meeting of deputies and senators at the Palace of Versailles.

Opposition from the Vatican

The Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life defended this Monday that “it cannot be a right” to end a human life, in response to the French Senate’s decision to include abortion in the Constitution.

“The Pontifical Academy for Life reiterates that precisely in the era of universal human rights there cannot be a ‘right’ to suppress human life,” it says in a statement.
