The Polish Parliament elected this Monday the leader of the opposition, Donald Tuskwho leads Civic Platformas the new prime minister after the investiture of the ultra-conservative Mateusz Morawiecki failed due to lack of support.

“This is a truly wonderful daynot only for me, but for all those who for many years have believed that things could improve,” said Tusk after the vote, which resulted in 248 votes in favor compared to 201 votes against, as reported by the PAP news agency.

This occurs after Morawiecki failed in his attempt to achieve the confidence of the Chamber after a vote in which he received only 190 votes in favor compared to 266 votes against. He was designated as a candidate to form a government by the Polish president, Andrezj Duda, without having the necessary support.

Civic Platform won 157 deputies in the last elections, which, added to the 65 from Third Way and the 26 from La Izquierda, have managed to unseat Morawiecki and his ultra-conservative policies.

For her part, the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsolahas stressed on the aforementioned social network that he hopes to work with Tusk, who is a “firm believer” in the European Union, “for a prosperous Poland and a stronger Europe.”
