Russian Petrov stripped of World Canoe Sprint Championship gold for second time in one day

Russian athlete Zakhara Petrovawho flipped over at the finish of the 500-meter race at the World Championships in Uzbekistan, was stripped of his gold for the second time in one day.

The Russian side challenged this decision. Zakhar Petrov overtook Sergei Tarnovsky from Moldova by 0.019 seconds, but fell out of the boat at the moment of crossing the finish line. At first, the protocol indicated that Petrov did not finish, after a protest, he was given back the gold, but this decision was contested by four other countries – and the Russian was again left without his first place. In the final, Petrov competed with athletes from the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Romania, Spain and South Korea, RBK Sport reports.

Secretary General of the All-Russian Federation of Kayaking and Canoeing Elena Iskhakova believes that the rules were violated by the World Cup organizers, who satisfied the protest of Petrov’s opponent.

A characteristic feature is the method of rowing – it is carried out with a shovel-shaped single-bladed oar, which is also used for steering by turning the oar in the water and changing its trajectory at the end of the stroke. Rowers in a canoe sit on the bottom of the boat or on bench seats.
