Anti-Chavez leader María Corina Machado and the presidential candidate of the largest opposition coalition in Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia, asked the military and police in a statement on Monday, prevent what they consider a coup” given by Nicolás Maduro, who, they say, wants to make them “complices” in this operation.
The text reiterates the complaint of electoral fraud what the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) has done – which claims to have won the presidential elections last Sunday, despite the fact that Maduro was announced as re-elected president – and the “repression” that followed the protests against the proclamation of the Chavista leader, questioned by a large part of the international community.
“We call on the conscience of military and police “so that they stand by the people and their own families (…) You can and must stop these actions immediately. We urge you to stop the regime’s rampage against the people and to respect, and to ensure respect for, the results of the elections,” the statement said.
