The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayusowill receive this afternoon at the Real Casa de Correos, headquarters of the regional Government, the president of Argentina, Javier Mileiand will give you the International Community Medalan action that has received applause from Vox but has been harshly criticized by left-wing parties.

It was the Argentine Government who confirmed this Wednesday that its president was visiting Spain again to receive an award from the Juan de Mariana Institute and that, in addition, he would be received by the Madrid president. Spain is the first stop of a european tour which will also lead you to Germany and Czech Republic, where he will meet with the respective heads of Government, Olaf Scholz and Petr Fiala. In the case of Scholz, the Argentine Government spokesperson has admitted that it will not be a typical bilateral meeting, but rather a more informal meeting.

Milei returns shortly after diplomatic crisis opened on his previous visit to the Peninsula to participate in a political convention organized by Vox. There she called Begoña Gómezwife of the president, Pedro Sánchez, “corrupt“, which caused Spain to withdraw its ambassador from the Latin American country.

On the new visit, the Argentine president, who has attacked Sánchez and the Government on several occasions, will not meet with the Executive. But, according to ‘El País’, he has asked to be received by Felipe VI, although this meeting is not on the agenda of the Royal Family.

Presentation of the International Community Medal

Ayuso will receive Milei in the emblematic Puerta del Sol building at 7 p.m. and will give her the International Community Medal “in recognition of the historical, cultural, linguistic and economic ties that unite the region with the Spanish-American country,” as indicated by the regional government.

By virtue of the recent Law 2/2024, approved by the Community of Madrid, this decoration is awarded as gesture of courtesy, recognition and respect from Madrid citizens to representatives of other countries and to the highest dignitaries of international organizations and the European Union.

In recent years, personalities such as the acting president of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó (2020); the president of the European Committee of the Regions, Apostolos Tzitzikostas (2021); that of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky (2022); and from the Republic of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa (2023).

Ayuso defended, during her speech in the Plenary Session of the Madrid Assembly, that it was an “honor” to give this distinction to Milei and pointed out that she is not to blame for the fact that he makes institutional visits to different governments and does not meet with “that that has caused a diplomatic crisis and that constantly insults”, not only him but “all governments that are not of his sign”.

An act criticized by the Government and that has the support of Vox

The meeting between Milei and Ayuso has been harshly criticized by the central government and left-wing parties. The first to speak out was the PSOE spokesperson in Congress, Patxi Lopezwho considered that Ayuso meets with Milei only for “humping” and warned that this is not the Government that Madrid deserves.

The second vice president has also spoken along these lines, Yolanda Diaz, who believes that with this award Ayuso “squanders” all the social rights of that country. He considers it “deeply serious” to reward a political leader who leads his people “to inequality”, cuts and “poverty”.

While the Minister of Health and leader of Más Madrid, Monica Garciahas considered the meeting “a institutional disloyalty quite interesting.” In fact, the regional formation has asked the president of the Community by burofax not to award the International Medal to Milei. They claim that this distinction is granted to leaders on official visits and this, as they point out, is not complies because it has been advertised as private.

The one who has celebrated the distinction is Vox. The spokesperson for this party in Congress, Pepa Millán, has supported the delivery of recognition, “especially after the unjustified attacks of this Government for denouncing the obvious.”

“He is a president who has achieved what was unthinkable in Argentina, ending a socialism that was ruining one of the countries that could be one of the richest in the world,” defended Millán, who has considered that Milei deserves “all the recognition.” “
