Albares will appear in the Senate on August 13 to present the Government’s position on Venezuela

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, will appear in the Senate on August 13 to assess the current situation in Venezuela after the presidential elections held last Sunday and to explain the Government’s management in the expulsion of ‘popular’ parliamentarians from the country presided over by Nicolás Maduro.

In a document dated July 31, Albares requested his appearance before the Senate’s Ibero-American Affairs Committee on August 13, in August, a non-working month, “to report on the Government’s position regarding the latest electoral process in Venezuela.”

The PP, with its absolute majority in the Senate, has made this appearance take place in the Foreign Affairs Committee on that same date so that Albares talks about Venezuela.

Albares’ first reaction to the presidential elections in Venezuela came last Monday, when requested “total transparency” and the verifiable publication of the “table by table” minutes of the Venezuelan elections, after the National Electoral Council (CNE), the Venezuelan electoral authority controlled by Chavismo, announced the victory of President Nicolás Maduro with 51% of the votes.

With this, the ‘popular’ party sent a letter to the Senate Board, in which they have an absolute majority, to enable the month of August to call Albares to appear to speak about Venezuela.

Specifically, the PP has carried out a reform of the Senate Regulations this term in which it requires members of the Government to appear before the Upper House whenever requested by the groups, except in cases of force majeure.

The trip of the PP parliamentarians to Venezuela

In any case, Albares will also appear before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee to explain the “behavior and decisions adopted by the Government” with the expulsion from Venezuela of a delegation of PP parliamentarians who traveled to witness the presidential elections.

The PP have even asked Pedro Sánchez’s government to call the Spanish ambassador to Venezuela for consultations to detail the steps he has taken in relation to this trip by the PP parliamentarians.
