I think that Joni is one of the most fascinating, talented and. for the enhancement of Ca^2+^-activated Cl^−^ current in mouse EY-23 cells by treatment of perfused hippocampal cells with isoflurane. This is mediated by the activation of GABA~A~ receptor, the receptor subtype of which is α2-γ2, by isoflurane through coactivation of other receptors ([@b37]).
A relevant finding in the present study is that VDCCs are also important in the generation of isoflurane-induced ROS in perfused hippocampal neurons. According to this study, isoflurane up-regulates Ca^2+^ influx via α1D subunit of the voltage-dependent L-type Ca^2+^ channel (VDCC) in rat hippocampal neurons ([@b4]).

Development of myocardial fibrosis is a key pathological change in heart failure (HF). It is well known that extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis is controlled by a variety of growth factors; however, the marker reflecting the activated state of cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) has not been well elucidated. Using monocrotaline-induced progressive myocardial fibrosis in rats, we assessed whether the N-terminal propeptide of procollagen I (P-I) is a good marker to measure activated CFs. Four weeks after monocrotaline injection, fibrosis was examined by H&E staining and Masson trichrome staining. The level of P-I in the serum and cardiac tissues was measured with ELISA. Transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) mRNA levels in cardiac tissues were determined with real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). H&E staining and Masson trichrome staining revealed that monocrotaline induced fibrosis in the heart. P-I levels in the sera and myocardium increased with increasing degrees of fibrosis, and were elevated in the monocrotaline-induced HF group as compared to the control group. The level of P-I was correlated with the degrees of fibrosis, but not with ventricular dysfunction. TGF-beta1 mRNA level was also elevated in the monocrotaline-
