DARPA proposes $5.7B investment in new accelerator technologies
The US Department of Defence’s (DOD) recently formed Future Rapid Capabilities Office (FRCO) has released a request for proposals seeking new acceleration technologies for military systems, despite some government entities attempting to block the initiative.
As part of its investment in the Next-Generation Nuclear Deterrent, the FRCO believes that new accelerator technologies will be crucial to military systems in the next 20 years.
“C’mon, we’ve heard it all before,” said a DARPA spokesperson when challenged on the justification for the initiative. “DARPA is creating a fundamental shift in ways we approach the militarisation of space.”
Noting that the proposed investments are made with limited expectation of return on investment, DARPA said its intent is to come up with new and sustainable solutions to solve urgent military challenges.
“DARPA’s funding and research will be around four times what it was in past performance. What we are asking for in this initiative is a return on our investment like never before,” continued the spokesperson.
In the full list of 42 proposals, DARPA’s first entry is an investment in the creation of a “High-Reuse and Cost-Efficient Multi-Mission Nanosatellite Launch Vehicle”.
The project aims to deliver a low-cost, reusable rocket, capable of launching nearly 100 satellites per year from a single pad. It is modelled on the existing SpaceX Falcon 9, and DARPA hopes to resolve the many technical problems of current launch vehicles, such as reliability, long-term development and budget overruns, with a single design.
“Our goal is to make the development of new capabilities more cost-effective and more routine,” said Nandan Kanan, DARPA’s deputy director, in a statement. “This should be leveraged to build a more robust future military programme.”
“We are seeking competing proposals to develop a reusable, scalable rocket engine that is affordable and able to achieve orbit multiple times.”
