Structural design, earth and earth-rock dams, steel design, concrete design, earth retaining walls, marine applications, geotechnical investigations, geosynthetics, and borrow pits are among the major engineering disciplines involved in the design of earth-rock dams. For a successful application of earth-rock dams there are several required characteristics of an earth dam structure: its design characteristics (design codes) must be determined, the rock types and their aggregate grades must be identified, a geological survey must be conducted to determine the site-related geologic conditions, the structural characteristics and foundation conditions, and the construction phase must be planned. Once the critical geologic and geotechnical parameters are assessed, a number of design options can be considered. The design process must also take into account the occurrence of probable geological events that might affect the design conditions of an earth-rock dam. This requires the experience of the excavator and the project engineer to recognize potential geological events and their effects on the projected design.
Definition
Terms used herein are taken from the Glossary of Terms in Highway Geology (Sheridan and Jordan, 1994) and refer to each of two principal types of earth dams [earth and earth-rock dams]. The first type is the conventional earth dam that has the typical structure of a (concrete) foundation wall and a (concrete) top wall with an earth fill (see Fig. 1A). The second type of earth dam is the earth and earth-rock dam. This type of earth dam has a (concrete) dam face over the top of the earth fill with an earth-rock barrier separating the foundation wall and the dam face (see Fig. 1B). In this type of dam there are two major elements, the foundation wall and the dam face. The construction of earth-rock dams presents a number of unique problems, related to the unique site geologic conditions, the difficulties in the design and construction of the dam face, and the residual effects of the construction upon the adjacent geologic areas.
