in our study, we show that when people are confronted with a banner ad, they tend to avoid looking at it. this is the “banner blindness effect”. the layout of the ad does not matter, the size or the type of ad. what matters is whether the ad triggers the viewer to move their attention away from the rest of the page.
take a look at the different web pages with and without ads. which is the one with more clickable elements? which is the one with more engaging content? which one is going to have more clicks? is the ad easier to ignore? is the ad more effective? the answers to these questions can differ depending on the type of ad used. in our last study we asked 10 participants to perform the same task on the same web page with and without an ad at the top. check out this video to learn more:
due to increased focus on the advertisement (banner blindness), participants in our study performed worse on tasks that require attention to non-ad content. for example, participants are more likely to fail to perceive the non-ad text below the ad.

we have constructed a database of forest thinning, thinning-and-buffer, and riparian buffer designs, and we have begun to model the effects of these disturbances on a variety of forest resources. the results of this modeling suggest that, in most situations, headwater stream biota will do well with the application of thinning-and-buffer treatments in riparian buffers, especially if these treatments are designed in a manner that reduces risks to water quality by blocking stormwater infiltration into the riparian buffer area. submerged wood production in riparian buffers appears to be improved by thinning-and-buffer treatments, and reduced sediment production and erosion appear to be favored for some treatments. these results suggest that for most stream-margin habitats, buffers would be the preferred alternative to thinning. we are currently conducting field experiments at a variety of sites to test these conclusions.
thinning and riparian-buffer treatments for riparian areas have been used for decades. in many instances, these treatments are considered to be temporary solutions for stream improvement, until a catchment is allowed to return to pre-logging conditions. however, the development of a headwater linkage area (hwa) design for riparian buffer management that incorporates a suite of techniques would provide an effective long-term management alternative for headwater stream biota. thinning-and-buffer treatments for riparian buffers can be designed to reduce risks to headwater biota through a variety of means, including the following: (1) reducing the strength of water flow in riparian areas, (2) reducing sediment production and erosion, and (3) reducing the spread of exotic aquatic species. these techniques would also reduce the risk to and improve the habitat conditions for many stream biota.
